UNIMED – Mediterranean Universities Union is an association of 127 Universities coming from 23 countries of both shores of Mediterranean. UNIMED’s aim is to develop university cooperation and mobility, and contribute to advancements in education and research in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
UNIMED’s aim is to develop university research and education in the Euro-Mediterranean area in order to contribute to scientific, cultural, social and economic cooperation.
The Universities in UNIMED’s network operate in many different fields, and thus UNIMED operates on many different fronts. Through the many initiatives carried out over two decades, UNIMED has promoted collaboration between the universities of the Mediterranean, becoming a point of reference of international university cooperation. UNIMED has a wide experience in EU project participation and management and in the field of Higher Education. UNIMED participates in a number of projects in different programmes (Erasmus+, Horizon 2020, Interreg MED)
Why we are participating in project
The migration phenomenon significantly impacts the Euro-Mediterranean region and for this reason, has always represented an important issue for UNIMED and its members.
UNIMED is running several initiatives to foster migrants’ and refugees’ inclusion with a view to developing a common vision and formulate a holistic strategy to respond to the associated challenges. UNIMED has coordinated the inHERE project (Higher Education supporting refugees in Europe), an Erasmus+ SP project aimed at placing the inclusion of refugees high on the agenda of the HE community in Europe. The project has strengthened knowledge sharing, peer-support and collaboration among institutions and universities, it has identified and disseminated good practices on supporting refugee access to, and success in, higher education, provided training for university staff and developed guidelines for higher education institutions. UNIMED is also coordinating the RESCUE project (Refugees Education Support in MENA Countries), an Erasmus+ CBHE project aimed at supporting universities in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq in structuring an effective response to the refugee challenge, by supporting the refugee students in resuming their academic training path.
Our role in the project
UNIMED, with its 127 Universities from 23 countries, facilitates European universities in integrating refugees from anywhere in the world through RESCUE project by creating ad hoc units whose mission is to structure specific services supporting the refugee students in resuming their academic training path. In addition, UNIMED empowers EU HE staff to take an active stand towards the integration of refugees at institutional and local level, based on international peer-support. IO1 will build its deliverables on these foundations.
Our Team
Cristina Stefanelli
She has a background in Architecture and Urban Planning and she has worked for several years at the Multimedia Research Lab at the University Iuav of Venice. From 2000 onwards, she became increasingly involved in national and international projects in the field of technology-enhanced learning, teaching and learning technologies, and virtual mobility. She has designed and led a number of training initiatives and she has a significant experience in the monitoring and evaluation of EU-funded projects, including technical and financial reporting.
Fabio Nascimbeni
Fabio Nascimbeni has been active in the field of learning innovation and ICT for learning since 1998, by designing and coordinating more than 50 research and innovation
projects and promoting European and international collaboration in different areas, from school education to higher education, to lifelong learning, to ICT research. His main research interests are open education, learning innovation, digital literacy, social and digital inclusion.
Ludovica De Benedetti
Ludovica De Benedetti holds a Master’s Degree in International Cooperation and Development from the University La Sapienza of Rome. She focused her studies on small territories’ response to migration. For UNIMED she is responsible for institutional and networking activities, in addition to communication and outreach tasks for virtual exchange initiatives.
Orlando Luca
uca Orlando, born in Timisoara (Romania) on December 18th, 1990, received an MBA from the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’. He joined UNIMED in February 2019 dealing with administrative tasks and financial reporting mostly related to Erasmus+ CBHE projects. He is enrolled as a trainee at both the Order of Chartered Accountants and Auditors and the Register of Auditors of Rome since 2018.
